ZLI's Bearanoia™ Campaign supports research in the photobiology, sensory ecology and macro-ecology of bears, emphasizing seasonal and habitat adaptations, along with the relationships of such adaptation to anxiety. Such anxieties include (valid or hysterical) human perceptions about bears, but also factors of stress resulting from undue separation from ‘natural’ habitat conditions. The purpose of this pursuit is to advance science according to ZLI's Mission and Framework, and to progressively advance science via courageous self-critique.
Open scientific critique that confronts anxiety directly aids both in the constant improvement of bear welfare in aquariums, sanctuaries and rehabilitation center, as well as for wild bears pressured by human development.
For example, stereotypical bear rocking might be described as a natural response to an unnatural historical set of circumstances, and top predators living near human communities face conditions that will affect their physiology, sensory ecology and ecological interactions, as well as humans in contact with them.
The main purpose of Bearanoia™ is to support and advance scientific understanding, with particular emphasis on how developing scientific understanding finds a place in the communities that should benefit most from it.

Help us fund the sciences of light and life to save animals and protect our environment!
Help ZLI fund and pursue research through scholarships, research programs, post-doctorates, research labs and endowed professorship.
Help ZLI fund the upcoming documentary Denial at the Crossroads, which presents a cutting scientific documentary to explore themes of anxiety in dealing with top predators.
Live sustainably for bears by supporting our wildlife-friendly design planning services (lighting, architecture, and engineering), participating in our sustainable fashion initiatives (proceeds go towards supporting bear research), as well as by investing in and purchasing sustainable products.
Explore the world of bears responsibly by signing up for one of ZLI's educational tours (re-starting in 2021), and/or join us on the set for the filming of our upcoming documentary.
Did you know a group bear cubs are called a litter, while a group of bears are called a sloth or sleuth? There is so much we can learn about and from bears. Join the Bearanoia™ Campaign today to learn more!
